Daisy Class Year 1 and 2
Welcome to Daisy Class!
Our class teacher is Mrs Gorczyca.
Our teaching assistants are Mrs Wright and Miss Boden.
On Friday afternoons, Daisy class are taught by Tameside Music Service and our PE Coach, Kian.

Homework
Reading books need to be in school every day and will be changed on a Friday. Children will bring home the Read, Write, Inc book that they have been reading in their lessons that week and a storybook related to the previous weeks learning.
Homework will be sent home on a Friday and is due to be returned on a Thursday.
Homework will consist of spellings and a maths task related to the learning we have done that week.
Reading at St George's
Reading is a huge part of life at St George’s. We ask that all children read at least 4 times a week at home to ensure they become fluent, comprehensive readers. Children will receive a raffle ticket every time there are 10 signatures in their reading record. One ticket will be drawn from each class at the end of every half term. The winner will receive a reading hamper of age-appropriate books.Alongside our class library, we also have our Top 10 Reads. These are books which have been specially chosen to promote reading for pleasure, equality and a high level of vocabulary. Children are encouraged to read as many of these 10 books throughout the year and record which they have read in the reading record.
Reading at Home - Oxford Owl
Alongside their school reading books at home, the children have access to Oxford Owl Online eBooks. The children's login details can be found in their reading records. These books will be able to support comprehension because at the end of each book children will have the opportunity to attempt the online quiz. Regular readers will become more fluent and have a good understanding of what they have read.
Read, Write, Inc
All children in Year 1 and 2 will continue to access Read, Write, Inc. for their phonics lesson. They will bring home reading books and spellings linked to their group.
English
This half term we will be reading Fire! Fire! by Stuart Hill.
Fire! Fire! by Stuart Hill is an exciting historical adventure set during the Great Fire of London in 1666. It follows a young boy named Tom, who finds himself trapped as the fire spreads through London. The story brings the disaster to life through his experiences, while also showing what London was like at the time. It’s a fast-paced and engaging book, particularly for children learning about the Great Fire of London.
Through this text we will explore what makes a sentence and setting descriptions.
Maths
This half term in maths, pupils will be focusing on Place Value and Addition and Subtraction within 20. All children will continue to follow Mastering Number to supplement their maths learning.
Science
Animals, including Humans
This half term in science, we will be learning about animals, including humands.
National Curriculum Objectives:
- identify and name a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals
- identify and name a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores
- describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals including pets)
- identify, name, draw and label the basic parts of the human body and say which part of the body is associated with each sense
- notice that animals, including humans, have offspring which grow into adults
- find out about and describe the basic needs of animals, including humans, for survival (water, food and air)
- describe the importance for humans of exercise, eating the right amounts of different types of food, and hygiene
RE
What does it mean to belong to a faith in a community?
In this unit, the pupils will focus on what it means to belong to a faith community. They will revisit knowledge from prior units about Muslims, Christians, and Jewish people, considering how members of these communities show that they belong. Throughout the unit, pupils will
encounter artefacts, places of worship and symbols. Pupils will also consider where they belong and the communities to which they are a part of.

History
The Great Fire of London
In history this half term we will be learning about the Great Fire of London. We will begin by looking at Manchester before comparing to London. We will then compare London to then and now before focusing on The Great Fire of London.

DT
Mechanisms
This half term in DT, our focus is on mechanisms. Through this unit of work, pupils will explore different mechanisms and learn to make moving pictures. They will combine their work to retell the story of the Great Fire of London through moving pictures.

Computing
Introduction to Purple Mash & Route Explorers
This half term in computing, we will begin to explore Purple Mash. Through this unit of work, pupils will be learning how to log into the laptops, how to access Purple Mash and how to program a simple set of instructions.
Learning Challenges:
- To login and create my own avatar on Purple Mash.
- To open an activity and then save the work to the ‘My Work’ area.
- To understand how to complete work in the 2Dos area in Purple Mash.
- To use the direction keys in 2Go to move the turtle along a route.
- To use units of distance along with the direction keys in 2Go to move along a route.
- To write instructions to complete more than one step of a route at once.
- To build up instructions for a longer route.
National Curriculum Objectives:
- Understand what algorithms are; how they are implemented as programs on digital devices; and that programs execute by following precise and unambiguous instructions
PHSCE
Meet Your Brain
We follow the myHappyMind program which is a whole-school approach to mental health and wellbeing that helps children understand how their brain works and how to take care of themselves mentally and emotionally. This scheme of work is science-based, grounded in neuroscience and positive psychology, and supported by research showing positive impact on children’s resilience and behaviour. It has been designed to build lifelong habits that support confidence, emotional regulation, relationships, gratitude and goal-setting.
Music
Our music this year will be taught by specialist music teachers from Tameside Music Service. Children will have the opportunity to explore a range of music and learn to play an instrument.
