Phonics

In Phonics we follow Read Write Inc a systematic synthetic phonics programme. Children develop reading fluency and comprehension, spell and write with confidence and learn to articulate their ideas and understanding.

Supporting your child at home|:

  • Use pure sounds, not letter names. Watch the ‘how to say the sounds’ parent film on Ruth Miskin:Ruth Miskin
  •  Watch the ‘Reading the stretchy sounds with your child’, ‘Reading the bouncy sounds with your child’ and ‘Reading the digraphs with your child’ parent films on Ruth Miskin to see how to teach Set 1 sounds.Ruth Miskin
  • Practise reading known Set 1 Speed Sounds cards speedily. If needed, show your child the picture side of the card to help them remember the sound.
  • Read the parent information booklet below:

Reading at Home - Booklet 1

We teach children to read and spell using Fred. He is a toy frog who can say the sounds in words, but not the whole word. Children have to help him.

To help children learn to blend, we say the sounds as Fred and then children repeat the sounds and say the whole word.

Here are two ways you can use Fred Talk at home:

  1. play Fred Games together – see Fred Games document on Ruth Miskin:Ruth Miskin
  2. speak like Fred throughout the day e.g. time for l-u-n-ch! Let’s p-l-ay!

During their time at the library they had the opportunity to explore a range of fiction and Non Fiction texts and had the opportunity to participate in Story time where the librarian read two exciting stories to the children. They all thoroughly enjoyed their visit and I am sure they will be returning soon with their families.

Maths

In Maths we follow Mastering Number it aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.

 Understanding the World

This week we have been focusing on recycling and caring for the environment. Through the story ‘Clean up!’ The children were introduced to plastic pollution, They created posters to highlight the importance of keeping our oceans clean and penned an email to Mr root to seek recycling bins for each class to encourage further recycling throughout school. The children will introduce the bins during whole school assembly on Tuesday and inform the school on their agenda and introduce eco champions.

Poppy class Science

Poppy Class have focusing on taking care of their environment and alongside providing recycling bins for each class they have been planning ways to improve the FS playground and have decided to create an Eco garden. This is still in it’s infancy but a new compost bin has been purchased along with gardening tools. In the coming months the children will begin to plant and grow their own vegetables. As a start to the project of caring for our environment the children have been making bird feeders to encourage wildlife to the area and the children have been eagerly observing using their bird spotting charts.

 Earth Day

Poppy Class have been continuing to care for the environment and during Earth day focused on recycling, reusing and reducing waste. During the day we shared the text ‘Dear Diary’ and identified how wonderful the world is and how humans are slowly destroying it. This led to the children creating their Earth day promises to protect the environment we live in. Another focus was the Eco garden which we are currently in the process of developing in the FS playground. to develop this further the children made seed bombs and spent time weeding and planting these in the outdoor provision which they will now spend time taking care of.

The Creepy Crawly Show

Last week Poppy class were visited by ‘The Creepy Crawly show’. This was a wonderful experience and allowed the children to be hands on with a variety of creepy crawlies. These ranged from snakes and lizards to spiders and Giant snails. These ranged children thoroughly enjoyed this session and were extremely brave getting up close with their new friends. The children gained lots of new information about their various creatures through lots of questions asked which really inspired the children to continue this learning back in the classroom where they set off on their own mini beast hunts in our outdoor area where they used a range of equipment to explore different habitats.

Take a look at how brave the children were during their recent visit…..
